As the chill in the air is reminding us, steady easterlies are blowing at the moment and the sea is very calm in Balnakeil Bay. Much less plastic is coming and with the productivity of shellfish booming and strong tides, the beach is gaining its white summer taint. However, the easterlies being not the main wind constructing the dunes, they are eroding and a lot of pollution that was buried in the dunes is being exposed. We collected 53 kg including the bin content this Sunday. Still a lot of work inland to recover some big pieces.
This really highlights why we need to survey more how plastic is cycling in the environment, it is not simply going to the ocean and dumped on the beaches, it gets stored, retransported, broken up, buried again etc
