January has been a quite energetic month with #StormBrendan which brought hundreds of kilos of plastic on Balnakeil Beach. Pollution rates reached a sustained 15 kg/day. A large part of the sand of the bay is gone offshore. Thanks to the hard work of two rangers the plastic has been removed before the sand came back in. This is a critical thing to do in winter if you want to effectively clean the beach so that the plastic does not come back up during the rest of the year.
Winter 2019-2020 is showing us intense sustained pollution rates. Besides the exceptional event of Storm Caroline in 2017, we have never recovered so much plastic coming ashore. Considering that plastic production still grows unrestricted it is normal that pollution rates are rising in parallel. We also hope that our rangers very regular beach cleans allow to capture more plastic before it goes back in the ocean.
