Coastal Ranger Position

Are you interested in environmental protection, circular economy, teaching, and have a scientific background? Do you want to work outdoors surrounded by stunning scenery (featured picture)? Plastic@Bay is looking for a strong minded, rigorous individual to join our team.

The mission of the Coastal Ranger is to acquire and process data on marine plastic pollution, to inform and teach, and to help develop our circular economy model. This position is ideal for someone starting research in marine plastic pollution, sedimentology and/or oceanography. 

Plastic@Bay’s mission is to limit the impact of plastic pollution on communities and their surrounding environment in NW Scotland. Our objectives are to remove plastic pollution from our beaches, research innovative ways to recycle and reuse marine plastic, inform the public about plastic pollution and support businesses looking for plastic alternatives. This mission relies on innovative research to understand how plastics move through our local environment.


  • Drivers license
  • Background in oceanography, sedimentology, earth sciences or similar
  • Interest in surveying and data communication
  • Interest in environmental and societal issues,
  • Fit to work outdoors all year round
  • Comfortable using computers
  • A willingness to learn.


Training and equipment will be provided.

This is a living wage position (£9.50 per hour) funded by the Highland and Island Environmental Foundation. The position is for six months at 32 hours per week, but we can be flexible. Priority is given to applicants from the Durness area, as securing accommodation during the Summer months is problematic. However, there are options so please contact us, if you are interested.
